The NYPL is building a large-scale OST presence throughout its three boroughs, where we serve twenty thousand children and youth every day. We are in the process of designing and implementing a number of different OST models. We are building a team of talented, committed and enthusiastic educators who recognize the NYPL s role in enriching the lives of the young people we serve.
The Out-of-School Time group seeks enthusiastic individuals to provide program assistance to the education coordinators running its Literacy Leaders after-school program at one of 4 library locations. Literacy Leaders prepares high school interns in the 11th and 12th grades to work with first and second graders to improve their reading skills and foster a love of reading. This past fall, high school students participated in a semester-long literacy course designed to train them to coach early elementary students in literacy. During the second semester and summer, the interns will be paired with first and second grade students to facilitate literacy activities during the after-school hours. The Literacy Leader Program Assistants will have the opportunity to assist programming staff in implementing best practices for children s programming and to learn about literacy education in the context of a large urban library system.
